Do you drink too much coffee? This is the disturbing effect on the brain of too much

Although moderate coffee consumption is associated with multiple health benefits, an excess has cerebrovascular consequences.

New research from the University of South Australia has just shown that excessive consumption of coffee, the main infusion consumed in Spain, could be detrimental to brain health, as it is associated with smaller total brain volumes and a higher risk of dementia.

The study, the largest of its kind, conducted by UniSA’s Australian Center for Precision Health and a team of international researchers, assessed the effects of coffee on the brains of 17,702 UK Biobank participants (among 37 and 73 years), and found that those who drank more than six cups of coffee a day had a 53% increased risk of dementia.

Kitty Pham, principal investigator and doctoral candidate at UniSA, says the research provides important data for public health. “Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the world. However, with a global consumption of more than nine billion kilograms per year, it is critical that we understand the potential health implications,” says Pham.

“This is the broader research on the connections between coffee, measurements of brain volume, dementia risks, and stroke risks“, Add. “It is also the largest study to take into account volumetric brain imaging data and a wide range of confounders.”
